Venmo announced early Thursday that the issue affecting its payment service had been resolved and the platform was “back up and running” after hours of user reports about failed transactions.
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate you bearing with us while our team addressed this,” the company shared in a post on X.
According to Downdetector, outage reports began surging around 6:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday. Social media quickly filled with complaints, with some users saying the disruption left them unable to pay for medication or even buy dinner.
Venmo had acknowledged the problem Wednesday night on X, saying it was “working on a fix.” However, the company has not offered any further details about what caused the outage or how it was resolved.
Peer-to-peer payment apps have grown rapidly over the last decade, and Venmo alone recorded 92 million active users last year.
